- At the centre of a tooth is a hollow space. In this space resides the pulp, or the living part of the tooth. The nerves and blood vessels in the pulp have their own distinct functions. The blood vessels transport much needed nutrients and oxygen to the teeth while the nerves are used for the communication of the sense of feeling.
- Your teeth can get damaged for various reasons. Cracks can form in the teeth from injuries or as a result of tooth decay. These cracks can make the pulp more vulnerable to damage. With tooth decay, harmful bacteria can make their way through the outer part of the tooth and as a result, an open cavity is created.
- Tooth decay is a serious matter and if you don’t get prompt treatment to halt the process, it will eventually reach the pulp and cause irreversible inflammation. This could possibly lead to severe infection and abscess formation. Abscesses are famous for being extremely uncomfortable and if the issue is not resolved, the infection can affect the surrounding tissues.
- Root canal treatment may be the only option you are left with if your tooth has suffered too much damage to be repaired using conservative measures.
What Exactly is Root Canal Treatment?
Root canal treatment is a type of “last resort” treatment as it is used for saving teeth that cannot be repaired with any other type of procedure. Your dentist will use specialized tools to remove the damaged pulp. They will then disinfect the tooth after which a filling is placed. At the end of the procedure, the area will be sealed.
Will it Hurt?
You’ve probably heard a rumor that root canal treatment is painful. Just, remember that you can’t believe everything you hear. Root canal treatment is not painful. It feels the same as many other routine dental procedures. A good comparable example is having a filling placed.
